Embellished Sculptures/Reliquary Figures
I’ve
always been fascinated by the fine line that artists walk between consumerist
culture and the idealistic realm of the aesthetic. In this work, the
foundational figures evoke traditional sculpture and art’s timeless fascination
with the human body, while the embellishments represent a magpie-like
collection of objects accumulated over the years. It merges my signature
figures with the relics of a life lived in a materialistic culture. However,
through transforming the scraps of daily living into art they regain life and
form a reliquary of the resaved pieces once fallen through the cracks. They are
simultaneously snapshots of the external culture of lived experience and of the
often insular culture of the artist’s world.
