Nature Paintings: Leaves and Skies
I collect leaves, bark, insects - natural objects that I embed in a pigmented encaustic medium of
beeswax and resin, transforming them into painted reliefs. How better
to preserve an autumnal leaf or memorialize a flower found on a distant journey? Built
of layers of translucent color, these encaustic works become luminous.
Texture subtly exposes the understructure, yet in the combination of
surface and foundation the result become mysterious. Simple mementos are thus transformed into allegories.
My atmoshperic painting series was inspired by landscapes of J.M.W. Turner and the textural capabilities of encaustic paint.
